Echoes of The Gift haunt director Kôji Fukada’s latest feature Harmonium, a chilling family drama about the consequences of culpability and the cost that the past bears on the present. Beginning like a comedy, cinematographer Ken’ichi Negishi’s long, static shots have more in common with Scandi noir than feel-good melodrama, cluing us into the tragedy that will befall family man Toshio (Kanji Furatachi), wife Akié (Mariko Tsutsui) and daughter Hotaru (Momone Shinokawa).
